RICE-FISH POLYCULTURE SYSTEM
INTEGRATED RICE-FISH POLYCULTURE SYSTEM OF NANDINA (LABEO NANDINA), CALBASU (LABEO CALBASU) AND GONIUS (LABEO GONIUS) IN AN OPEN LAKE – A.S.M. Tawhidour Rahman and M.M.A. Quddus, Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh
The study was conducted to INTEGRATED RICE-FISH POLYCULTURE SYSTEM OF NANDINA (LABEO NANDINA), CALBASU (LABEO CALBASU) AND GONIUS (LABEO GONIUS) IN AN OPEN LAKE was done from December 2011 to November 2012 in the Dhopadanga beel and in pond at village Gaburdia of Modhukhali upazila in Faridpur district. Three economically important fish species of Labeo nandina, L. calbasu and L. gonius in on indigenous cyprinid of Bangladesh. This species is well for its taste. In the past this species was abundantly available in our open water system. After preparation of all land, paddy field and ponds of lake were stocked with the fingerlings of Labeo nandina, L. calbasu, L. gonius and others fresh water fishes. A total no. of 333, 533 and 423 fish samples of Labeo nandina, L. calbasu and L. gonius used in this study area. Total length (TL), fork length (FL) and standard length (SL) for each individual was measured by cm scale and body weight (BW) was also taken by a digital balance. The ranged from 6.5 to 15.3 cm TL and 7.3 to 35.73 gm BW of L. calbasu, 5.3 to 7.5 cm TL and 6 to 19.5 gm BW of L. nandina and 8.4 to 14.7 cm TL and 7.2 to 27.4 gm of L. gonius was measured respectively. Water quality was investigates at 15 days interval. The temperature ranged from 25 to 320 C, pH from 6.5 to 9.3, transparency from 10.5 to 35.5 cm, DO from 4 to 8 mg/l, CO2 from 3 to 8 mg/l recorded. Harvest was caught by traditional fishing gear during November-2013. Finally after harvest TL of Labeo nandina, L. calbasu and L. gonius are 6.86 to 31.43 cm, 18.5 to 34.67 and 12.38 to 28.93 cm and BW are 32 to 556, 15.7 to 453 and 22.4 to 300 gm respectively. The production of rice (Oryza sativa) 10.32kg/decimal (total 1880kg) and Pulse (Pisum sativum) 2.19kg/decimal (total 400kg) was found of during period. Some fishes leave their own abode and they take shelter in the outer khal, beel, pond and rivers. On the other hand some fishes enter in to the beel from outer khal, beel, pond and rivers. Some fish species enter here which were not let go in that beel. Here mentioned that no excessive artificial food or any fertilizer is not applied for the improvement of fishes in this open beel. But essential fertilizer (natural and artificial) was used for producing crops.
