Impact of co-curricular activities on primary level students in Bangladesh

The aim of education is to enlighten students, which can be achieved through co-curricular activities. This study examines the impact of these activities on the holistic development of primary-level students in Bangladesh. While academic studies provide us with theoretical knowledge, co-curricular activities - such as sports, music, debates, and art - shape our character and personality. These activities teach essential life skills, such as teamwork, leadership, and time management that, cannot be learned from textbooks. To conduct the study, five primary schools were selected, involving 300 students and five teachers chosen purposively. Data collection tools included a mixed-methods approach with semi- structured questionnaire for the students and interview schedules for teachers. Those data were analyzed with graphical and tabular representations. This study indicates significant engagement, teamwork, and confidence levels among students. Specifically, the study highlights how these activities provide a balanced learning environment. The results suggest that integrating co-curricular programs into the primary curriculum is essential for nurturing well-rounded individuals. Ultimately, this study will also play a significant role in preventing students’ dropouts from their early school and making them well-adjusted individuals.

“While academics build the mind, co-curricular activities build the character, resilience, and, the invaluable life skills needed to navigate the world (1). Co-curricular activities are proof that there is a big creative world of learning beyond the classroom. In a student’s life, co-curricular activities act like a bridge that prepares them for the future, making them self-confident, responsible, and capable. In my point of view, these activities are very helpful for the students in achieving new learning outside the textbook. It is our aim to make primary level child extraordinary and, co-curricular activities are these activities from which we can get easily an extraordinary child.

Co-curricular activities primarily refer to those additional activities outside the core curriculum that aim to achieve the holistic development of students. Although these were once called “extracurricular activities,” their importance is now recognized by labeling them as “co-curricular activities,” because they serve as an inseparable part of a student’s education and personality development. Co-curricular activities are activities usually performed by students-, outside the classroom, happily, and they gain some new knowledge from them.

In the era of technology, our students have badly needed co-curricular activities. Our small soul is addicted to this technology day by day. All the time, they use these time- killing devices after school. As a result, they don’t feel enjoy and comfortable in school and they try to make cause to leave the school. These technologies kill their valuable time and destroy their life before they grow. We can get back our small children and make their future better by the proper use of co-curricular activities. These activities are very much effective in giving them a better environment in our primary school, which makes them good human beings in the future. However, the importance of co-curricular activities is vital and crucial for developing our primary - level students.
