Cyclone Arnab — English Version
Cyclone Arnab: Signal 3, Landfall Time and Bangladesh Impact 2026
The very severe cyclonic storm Arnab, formed over the Bay of Bengal, is now moving towards the coast of Andhra Pradesh in India. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has advised all four maritime ports of the country — Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra — to keep Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 hoisted. The good news is that this cyclone is not going to hit Bangladesh directly. It is forecast to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on the morning of Wednesday, 28 October 2026. Its impact on Bangladesh will be limited to light rain in the coastal areas on Wednesday and Thursday. Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution. This post brings together the latest position of Cyclone Arnab, its track, the meaning of Signal No. 3, the landfall time and place, its impact on Bangladesh, advice for fishermen, and the preparations taken in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
Latest Position of Cyclone Arnab
According to a special bulletin from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued early on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, the very severe cyclonic storm Arnab was positioned over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas at 3:00 am. At that time its centre was at 15.8 degrees North latitude and 85.6 degrees East longitude. It was 990 kilometres southwest of Chattogram port, 945 kilometres southwest of Cox's Bazar port, and 865 kilometres south of both Mongla and Payra ports.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), at 5:30 am on Tuesday the cyclone was about 260 kilometres southeast of Visakhapatnam and about 300 kilometres east-southeast of Kakinada. It was about 380 kilometres south of Gopalpur in Odisha. Over the previous six hours it had moved westwards at about 22 kilometres per hour.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kilometres of the centre of the storm is 118 kilometres per hour, rising to 150 kilometres per hour in gusts. The sea near the centre of the cyclone is very rough. The movement of the cyclone is being monitored continuously by the Doppler Weather Radar at Visakhapatnam.
Cyclone Arnab is the first cyclonic storm of the 2026 North Indian Ocean cyclone season. It intensified from a severe cyclonic storm into a very severe cyclonic storm late on Monday night, 26 October.
Track and Timeline of Arnab
Time | Status |
Late night, Monday 26 October | Intensified from a severe cyclonic storm into a very severe cyclonic storm |
3:00 am, Tuesday 27 October | BMD special bulletin: 990 km from Chattogram, 945 km from Cox's Bazar, 865 km from Mongla and Payra; wind speed 118 km/h, gusts up to 150 km/h |
Morning, Tuesday 27 October | Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at all four maritime ports; fishing boats and trawlers advised to stay close to the coast |
5:30 am, Tuesday 27 October | IMD update: 260 km southeast of Visakhapatnam; moving westwards at 22 km/h |
Until evening, Tuesday 27 October | Forecast to move west-northwestwards |
Morning, Wednesday 28 October | Forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to Yanam |
What Does Signal No. 3 Mean?
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department uses signals numbered 1 to 11 for the maritime ports. Signal No. 3 is the Local Cautionary Signal. It means that the port is likely to be affected by squally weather. When this signal is hoisted, ships and boats at the port must stay alert, and fishing boats and trawlers at sea are advised to stay close to the coast and move with caution.
The signals at a glance:
Signal | Name | Meaning |
No. 1 | Distant Cautionary Signal | A depression has formed far away in the sea; stay alert |
No. 2 | Distant Warning Signal | A cyclone has formed far away; caution is needed at sea |
No. 3 | Local Cautionary Signal | The port may be affected by squally weather |
No. 4 | Local Warning Signal | The port is very likely to be affected by squally weather |
No. 5, 6 and 7 | Danger Signal | The port may be hit by the cyclone from the left, right or directly |
No. 8, 9 and 10 | Great Danger Signal | The port may be hit by a severe cyclone |
In the case of Arnab, Signal No. 3 means that although the cyclone is far from the Bangladesh coast, the sea is rough, so caution is needed for ports and for boats at sea. It is a signal of caution, not of panic.
Where Will Arnab Make Landfall?
According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department, the very severe cyclonic storm Arnab will cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to Yanam, by the forenoon of Wednesday, 28 October 2026. At landfall the maximum sustained wind speed will be 115 to 125 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 140 kilometres per hour.
Before landfall, the cyclone will move west-northwestwards until the evening of Tuesday, 27 October, and then turn northwestwards towards the coast. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Tuesday and Wednesday. Odisha may receive rain on 28 October, Chhattisgarh on 28 and 29 October, and East Uttar Pradesh on 29 October.
Impact of Arnab on Bangladesh
In short, Cyclone Arnab is not going to hit Bangladesh directly. Its track is moving away from Bangladesh towards the Andhra Pradesh coast of India. BMD meteorologist Md. Abdul Hamid Mia has said that the present track of the cyclone is towards the Andhra coast, so its direct impact on Bangladesh will be minimal.
But the impact will not be exactly zero. Light rain is possible in the coastal areas on Wednesday and Thursday. Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions may also see light rain on Thursday, after the cyclone weakens following landfall in India. Wind speed may rise slightly in the coastal areas because the sea remains rough.
It should be remembered that the track of a cyclone can change at any time. So the next special bulletins from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department should be followed closely. If any signal changes, the department will announce it immediately.
Warning for Fishermen
Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice. They have also been advised not to venture into the deep sea. Going into the deep sea is dangerous now because the sea near the centre of the cyclone is very rough.
Advice for fishermen:
Do not go fishing in the deep sea; stay close to the coast
Stay alert until the next bulletin from the Meteorological Department
Keep boats and trawlers tied up in safe places
Keep listening to weather news on radio and mobile phones
Keep in touch with the local administration and the Coast Guard in case of emergency
Preparations in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
Extensive preparations have been taken in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in India ahead of the landfall of Arnab. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red warning for the Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts. A red alert has been issued for 11 districts of Andhra Pradesh.
The South Coast Railway has cancelled 53 train services on 27 and 28 October as a precautionary measure. Passengers have been asked to check the latest train information before going to stations. Air India has also issued a travel advisory for passengers.
A total of 1,763 shelters have been kept ready in Andhra Pradesh. In the Gajapati district of Odisha, 15,000 vulnerable people have been identified for evacuation, and 281 cyclone shelters and temporary shelters have been kept ready. The administration has also arranged for the relocation of pregnant women whose delivery dates are near.
The Andaman and Nicobar administration has ordered the closure of all schools on Tuesday, 27 October. Heavy rain and gusty winds have already started in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has said that rainfall and wind intensity may increase further as the cyclone comes closer to the coast. Residents of vulnerable areas have been urged to stay indoors and follow official safety instructions. At Uppada beach in the Kakinada district, coastal erosion has been reported — high waves displaced protective boulders onto a road, and public access to beaches has been barred.
How Does a Cyclone Form?
A cyclone is a low-pressure weather process formed over the sea, with rain, thunder and violently rotating winds. When the air pressure falls at a place in the sea, a low forms there. When this pressure falls further, a depression, a deep depression and finally a cyclone are formed.
For a cyclone to form, the surface temperature of the sea needs to be above 26.5 or 27 degrees Celsius. The water of the Bay of Bengal stays above this temperature for most of the year, so conditions for cyclone formation are created here. In the Northern Hemisphere, a cyclone rotates anticlockwise. Why cyclones form and the causes behind the formation of cyclones explain the causes of cyclone formation in detail.
Cyclones are classified according to wind speed. According to the classification of the India Meteorological Department:
Category | Wind speed (km/h) |
Depression | 31–49 |
Deep Depression | 50–61 |
Cyclonic Storm | 62–88 |
Severe Cyclonic Storm | 89–117 |
Very Severe Cyclonic Storm | 118–165 |
Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm | 166–221 |
Super Cyclonic Storm | 222 or more |
The wind speed of Arnab is 118 kilometres per hour — that is, it is at the very beginning of the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm category. At landfall its speed is forecast to be 115 to 125 kilometres per hour, which means it will cross the coast as a very severe cyclonic storm as well.
Will Arnab Strengthen Further?
No, no significant further intensification is forecast. On Tuesday morning the wind speed of Arnab was 118 kilometres per hour, and at landfall it is forecast to be 115 to 125 kilometres per hour — that is, its strength will remain roughly the same until landfall. After landfall, once it moves over land, the cyclone will weaken quickly, because over land it does not get the supply of water vapour that the sea provides. Weakening into a depression, it will move towards Odisha, Chhattisgarh and East Uttar Pradesh, bringing rain.
Arnab will not become a super cyclone either. For a super cyclone the wind speed has to be 222 kilometres per hour or more — the speed of Arnab is nowhere near that.
What Does the Name Arnab Mean?
Arnab is a Bengali word meaning the ocean or the sea. The name of this cyclone formed over the Bay of Bengal is therefore connected with the sea itself. The names of cyclones in the North Indian Ocean region are given from a pre-prepared list. Arnab is the first cyclonic storm of the 2026 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.
Comparison With Earlier Cyclones
Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal are nothing new. In December 2021, Cyclone Jawad also formed over the Bay of Bengal and moved towards Odisha and Andhra Pradesh in India, before changing track and threatening to come towards Bangladesh. At that time too, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports were advised to lower Distant Warning Signal No. 2 and hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3. The earlier situation of Cyclone Jawad can be read here.
Arnab has similarities with Jawad — both formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal, and in both cases Signal No. 3 was hoisted at the ports of Bangladesh. But there are differences too: Arnab is much stronger than Jawad — it is going to hit the coast as a very severe cyclonic storm, and its track has been towards the Andhra Pradesh coast from the beginning. Jawad, on the other hand, weakened in the end and turned into a deep depression.
What Coastal People Should Do
Cyclone Arnab is not hitting Bangladesh directly, but people in the coastal areas still need to stay alert. Light rain is possible on Wednesday and Thursday, and wind speed may rise. Advice for coastal residents:
Listen to the latest bulletins from the Meteorological Department regularly
Keep important documents, dry food and clean drinking water at hand
Keep mobile phones charged
Do not take shelter under trees or in weak houses
Do not go to the beach while the sea is rough
If the signal rises, follow the instructions of the local administration and move to a shelter
