Adjective
Definition:
Adjective is a kind of words used in a sentence to qualify a noun or a pronoun. (ev‡K¨ noun ev pronoun Gi †`vl, ¸Y, Ae¯’v, msL¨v BZ¨vw` cÖKvk Ki‡Z †h mKj kã e¨envi Kiv nq, Zv‡`i‡K Adjective e‡j|)
Adjective are mainly of two types. (Adjective cÖavbZt `ycÖKvi|):
A. Attributive Adjective:(Adjective hLb noun Gi c~‡e© e‡m IB noun Gi †`vl-¸Y cÖKvk K‡i, ZLb Zv‡K Attributive Adjective e‡j|)
Examples: The intelligent girl stood first in the examination.
B. Predicative Adjective: (Adjective hLb verb ev wµqvi c‡i e‡m noun ev pronoun Gi †`vl-¸Y cÖKvk K‡i, ZLb Zv‡K Predicative Adjective e‡j|)
Examples: The girl is very intelligent.
Note: Both Attributive and Predicative Adjective qualify a noun. But only adjective qualifies a pronoun. (Attributive Adjective Ges Predicative Adjective noun-†K qualify Ki‡Z cv‡i| wKš‘ †KejgvÎ Predicative Adjective pronoun-†K qualify K‡i|)
# However, there are eight kinds of Adjective in terms of nature. (cÖK…wZMZ wePv‡i Adjective AvU cÖKvi| h_v):
1. Proper Adjective: (Proper noun †_‡K Proper Adjective nq|)
Examples: Asian, Chinese, French, English, African, Panjabi etc.
2. Adjective of Quality: (noun ev pronoun Gi †`vl, ¸Y, Ae¯’v cÖKvk K‡i|)
Examples: good, bad, wise, noble, rich, poor, great, hot, cold, warm etc.
3. Adjective of Quantity: (noun ev pronoun-Gi Quantity ev cwigvY eySvq|)
Examples: much, huge, some, a little, all, any, half, full, whole, enough etc.
4. Numeral Adjective: (noun ev pronoun-Gi msL¨v cwigvY eySvq| Giv Avevi wZb cÖKv‡ii nq| h_v):
Examples: one, two, three, tour, first, second, third, fourth, all, any, many, some, several, each, every, a few etc.
a) Cardinal Number: one, two, three etc.
b) Ordinal Number: First, Second, Third etc.
c) Nominal Number: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.
5. Demonstrative Adjective: (†Kv‡bv e¨w³ ev ¯‘‡K we‡klfv‡e wb‡`©k K‡i|)
Examples: this, that, these, those, such etc.
6. Distributive Adjective: (GKvwaK e¨w³ ev ¯‘i g‡a¨ cÖ‡Z¨K‡K c„_Kfv‡e wb‡`©k K‡i|)
Examples: each, every, either, neither
7. Interrogative Adjective: (cÖkœevPK kã (Wh words) noun-Gi c~‡e© Adjective-Gi g‡Zv e¨eüZ nq|)
Examples: whose, which, what
8. Possessive Adjective: (AwaKvi ev m¤^Üm~PK Adjective|)
Examples: my, our, your, his, her, their
