UGC
allows 3 new public varsities to start classes from next year
The
University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday gave permission to three new
public universities to start academic activities from the next year.
As a result, these universities can admit students
from next year for the 2023-24 academic year.
The
universities are Kurigram Agricultural University, Sunamganj Science and
Technology University and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and
Technology University, Pirojpur.
Among the three, Sunamganj Science and
Technology University was established in 2020 and the other two were
established in 2022.
The decision was taken at a meeting, held at the
UGC Bhaban, headed by the commission member Professor Muhammed Alamgir on the
day, said a press release issued by the commission.
The meeting was held to approve the proposed
faculties, departments and workforces for the three universities.
The meeting approved Kurigram Agricultural
University to open the Agriculture and Fisheries faculty while Sunamganj
Science and Technology University got permission to open Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry and Computer Science and Engineering departments and Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Pirojpur was allowed
to open Mathematics, Psychology, Statistics and Computer Science and
Engineering departments under the Science and the Engineering and Technology
faculties.
Currently, there are 56 public and 112 private
universities in the countr
