Bangladesh is a land of villages, so village fairs, locally known as “Mela,” are very common. A village fair is an event/fair where village products and other goods are displayed and sold at reasonable prices in a village. It is one of the most enjoyable and exciting events in rural life, usually held once or twice a year on the riverbank, under a big banyan tree, or in an open field, and generally lasts from one day to a week.
Handmade items such as clay pots, bamboo flutes, wooden furniture, toys, dolls, and nakshi kantha are sold, alongside sweets like jilapi, batasha, muri-murki, fruits, and other local delicacies. Villagers are entertained with jatra, jarigan, puppet shows, circus performances, and cockfights. The main attractions of the fair are its colorful stalls, handicrafts, and cultural programs, which draw men, women, and children from all classes with great joy.
However, problems such as gambling, pickpocketing, and the risk of children getting lost due to overcrowding and carelessness may occur. Despite these issues, people eagerly wait for the fairs each year, as they bring excitement and liveliness to village life. Village fairs not only provide pleasure and shopping opportunities but also strengthen social bonds, promote the rural economy, and preserve folk culture. Thus, a village fair is not only a source of entertainment but also an essential part of rural life in Bangladesh.
