A stage a drama application is one of the most common formal application topics in the English second paper examination of Bangladesh. Students of class 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, as well as SSC and HSC candidates, are frequently asked to write an application to the Principal, Headmaster or class teacher seeking permission to stage a drama in the school or college auditorium. The occasion may be the annual cultural programme, Independence Day, Victory Day, the school's founding anniversary, or a class performance. This post explains the formal application format step by step, gives three complete sample applications for different exam situations, and adds useful phrases, exam tips and frequently asked questions so that you can score full marks on this topic.

Formal Application Format for Staging a Drama

Before you memorise any sample, understand the fixed skeleton of a formal application. Examiners check whether you have followed the format correctly, so learn each part by heart.

  1. Date: Write the date on the top left or right. Use a realistic current date, such as 12 November 2026.

  2. Recipient's address: Write "The Principal" or "The Headmaster", followed by the name and address of the institution. If the question says "class teacher", address it to the class teacher.

  3. Subject: Write "Subject:" in bold followed by a one-line summary, for example "Application for permission to stage a drama."

  4. Salutation: Write "Sir," or "Madam," depending on the recipient. Never skip the comma.

  5. Body (two or three paragraphs): The first paragraph introduces yourself and states the purpose of writing. The second paragraph gives the details — the name of the drama, the occasion, the venue, the date and time, the rehearsal progress, the teacher who is guiding the students, and any request for funds or permission to use the hall. The third paragraph is the polite request for permission, starting with phrases like "We, therefore, pray and hope".

  6. Closing: Write "Yours obediently," then your name, class and roll number on the next lines. If you are writing on behalf of all students, add "On behalf of the students of class ...".

Remember one golden rule: the title of the application is never written twice, and the body must not repeat the subject line word for word. Now let us look at three complete samples you can adapt in the examination hall.

Sample Application 1: To the Principal of a College for Staging a Drama at the Annual Cultural Programme

This is the most common HSC and class 11-12 version. The question usually says: imagine you are the Cultural Secretary of your college, and your department wants to stage a drama at the annual cultural programme. Write an application to the Principal seeking permission.

12 November 2026

The Principal

Dhaka College, Dhaka-1000

Subject: Application for permission to stage a drama at the annual cultural programme.

Sir,

With due respect, we, the students of the Department of English, beg to state that we intend to stage a drama in the college auditorium on the occasion of the annual cultural programme to be held next month. We have selected Shakespeare's play "The Merchant of Venice", which carries a strong moral message about justice and mercy.

We are glad to inform you that the rehearsal of the drama has been going on for two weeks under the guidance of our respected teacher, Mr. Farid Ahmed. All the roles will be played by the students of our department, and the teachers of other departments have already been invited to enjoy the performance. Everything now depends on your kind permission to use the college auditorium on the day of the programme.

We, therefore, pray and hope that you would kindly grant us permission to stage the drama in the college auditorium and also sanction a small fund from the cultural fund so that we can arrange costumes and stage decorations properly.

Yours obediently,

Tanvir Hossain

Cultural Secretary, Department of English

On behalf of the students of Dhaka College

Sample Application 2: To the Headmaster of a School for Staging a Drama on the School's Founding Anniversary

This version is asked in class 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 examinations. The question is typically: write an application to the Headmaster seeking permission to stage a drama on the occasion of the school's founding anniversary.

18 October 2026

The Headmaster

Comilla Zilla School, Comilla

Subject: Application for permission to stage a drama on the school's founding anniversary.

Sir,

We, the students of class VIII of your school, beg most respectfully to state that the 175th founding anniversary of our school will be celebrated with great enthusiasm on the 15th of next month. On this happy occasion, we want to stage a drama in the school auditorium to make the celebration colourful and memorable.

We have decided to stage "Kabar" by Munier Chowdhury, a play that teaches us the value of patriotism and sacrifice. Our Bengali teacher, Mr. Abdur Rahim, has kindly agreed to direct the drama and train us in acting. The rehearsal is progressing well, and we are confident that the performance will delight the audience, including the guardians and the invited guests.

We, therefore, fervently pray that you would kindly permit us to stage the drama in the school auditorium and oblige thereby.

Yours obediently,

Sakib Rahman

Sample Application 3: Short Application to the Class Teacher for a Class Drama Performance

Examiners sometimes set a shorter question: write an application to your class teacher for permission to stage a drama in the classroom. This sample is written in simple language suitable for class 6 and 7 students.

05 December 2026

The Class Teacher

Class VI, Section A

Motijheel Government Boys' High School, Dhaka

Subject: Prayer for permission to stage a drama in the classroom.

Sir,

We, the students of class VI, Section A, beg to state that we want to stage a short drama in our classroom on the last day before the winter vacation. We have prepared a funny and instructive drama named "The Honest Woodcutter", and all the students of our section will take part in it.

We promise that our performance will not disturb any other class. We will rehearse only during the tiffin period and after school hours, and our class teacher's permission is the only thing we need now.

We, therefore, humbly request you to kindly allow us to stage the drama and oblige thereby.

Yours obediently,

Rakibul Islam

Useful Phrases and Sentence Patterns for a Drama Application

If you learn the useful phrases below, you can write a stage a drama application on any occasion without memorising a full sample. Examiners reward students who use polite, formal and varied sentence patterns.

Opening lines:

  • With due respect, we, the students of class ..., beg to state that ...

  • We beg most respectfully to draw your kind attention to the fact that ...

  • I am writing this application on behalf of the students of ... to seek your kind permission ...

  • It is a matter of great pleasure that our school/college is going to celebrate ...

Stating the purpose:

  • We intend to stage a drama named "..." in the school auditorium.

  • We have selected the play "..." by ..., which carries a strong moral lesson.

  • The drama will be staged on the occasion of the annual cultural programme / Independence Day / Victory Day / founding anniversary.

Showing preparation:

  • The rehearsal of the drama has been going on for ... under the guidance of our teacher ...

  • Our teacher has kindly consented to direct the play and train us in acting.

  • All the roles will be played by the students themselves, and no outside actor will be invited.

Requesting permission politely:

  • We, therefore, pray and hope that you would kindly permit us to stage the drama.

  • We, therefore, fervently request you to accord us the necessary permission.

  • We shall remain ever grateful to you for this act of kindness.

Assuring discipline:

  • We assure you that the performance will not disturb the regular classes.

  • We promise to maintain full discipline during the rehearsal and the performance.

  • The drama contains nothing objectionable, and it is purely educational and entertaining.

Closing lines:

  • We hope you will consider our request favourably.

  • We look forward to your kind and sympathetic consideration.

Tips for Scoring Full Marks in the Stage a Drama Application

  1. Follow the format exactly. Many students write a good body but forget the date, the subject line or the closing signature. Each missing part costs marks.

  2. Match the recipient to the question. If the question says "Headmaster", do not write "The Principal". For schools write Headmaster; for colleges write Principal; for a class performance write class teacher.

  3. Name the drama, the occasion and the venue. An application that says "a drama" without a title or occasion looks vague. Mention the play's name, the occasion (Victory Day, founding anniversary, cultural programme), the venue and the date or time.

  4. Use formal and polite language. Words like "beg to state", "kindly", "graciously", "oblige thereby" belong to formal applications. Avoid casual expressions and contractions.

  5. Keep the body between 120 and 180 words. This length fits the examination time and covers all the required points. The three samples above fall in this range.

  6. Do not make grammatical mistakes in the memorised phrases. The sentences you memorise are the ones examiners read most carefully, so practise them until they are error-free.

  7. Write "On behalf of the students" when the question says "the students want". If the question says "you want", write in the first person singular. Matching the question's voice shows comprehension.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Stage a Drama Application

1. How do I write a stage a drama application for class 9?

Use the school version addressed to the Headmaster. Name a well-known play such as "Kabar" by Munier Chowdhury, mention the occasion (Victory Day, Independence Day or the founding anniversary), state that rehearsal is going on under a teacher's guidance, and close with "Yours obediently" followed by your class and roll. Sample 2 above is a ready model for class 9.

2. What is the subject line for an application to the principal for staging a drama?

Write "Subject: Application for permission to stage a drama." For a specific occasion, you may extend it: "Subject: Application for permission to stage a drama at the annual cultural programme." Keep it to one line and never end it with a full stop in some boards' style — either style is accepted as long as it is consistent.

3. Should I write to the Principal or the Headmaster?

Write to the Principal for a college and to the Headmaster for a school. Read the question carefully: if it names a college, address the Principal; if it names a school, address the Headmaster. Writing to the wrong authority is a common and avoidable mistake.

4. What details must I include in the body of the application?

Include the name of the drama, its writer, the occasion, the venue (auditorium or hall), the proposed date, the progress of rehearsal, the name of the guiding teacher, and the specific request — permission to use the hall and, if needed, a small fund for costumes and decoration.

5. Can I write a short version of this application for class 6 and 7?

Yes. Use simple sentences, address the class teacher or Headmaster, choose a short instructive drama, and keep the body around 100 words. Sample 3 above is written exactly at that level.

6. How is a drama application different from a cultural function application?

A drama application asks permission to stage one specific play and usually names the play, the director and the rehearsal progress. A cultural function application covers a whole programme of songs, dances, recitations and speeches. If the question mentions a drama by name, write the drama application.

7. What if the question asks for permission to stage a drama on Victory Day?

Follow the school version but set the occasion as Victory Day (16 December). Choose a patriotic play such as "Kabar" or "Raktakta Prantar" by Munier Chowdhury, and add one sentence explaining that the drama will awaken patriotic feelings among the students. This single sentence strongly matches the occasion.

8. Which closing is correct — "Yours obediently" or "Yours sincerely"?

Both are acceptable in Bangladeshi board examinations, but "Yours obediently," is the traditional and safest choice for a student writing to the Principal or Headmaster. Always follow it with your name, class and roll number.
