Sixty Dome Mosque, locally known as Shat Gombuj Masjid, is one of the most magnificent mosques in Bangladesh. It is situated in Bagerhat district, in the south-western part of the country. এটি বাংলাদেশের একটি অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঐতিহাসিক ও প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন।

The mosque was built in the 15th century by Khan Jahan Ali, a Turkish general, saint and administrator who ruled over this region during the Sultanate period. খান জাহান আলী শুধু একজন শাসকই ছিলেন না, তিনি ছিলেন একজন ধর্মপ্রাণ সুফি সাধকও, যিনি এই অঞ্চলে ইসলাম প্রচার এবং জনবসতি স্থাপনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখেন।

Interestingly, although the mosque is called "Sixty Dome Mosque," it does not actually have sixty domes. মূলত এতে ৮১টি গম্বুজ রয়েছে — ৭৭টি ছোট গম্বুজ এবং ৪টি চারকোণা গম্বুজ। The name "Sixty Dome" probably refers to the sixty pillars that support the roof of the mosque, not the domes themselves.

The mosque is built of brick, following the traditional architectural style of the Sultanate period, with strong Central Asian and Middle Eastern influences blended with local Bengal craftsmanship. এর দেয়াল অত্যন্ত পুরু এবং মজবুত, যা একে দীর্ঘদিন টিকিয়ে রাখতে সাহায্য করেছে। The mosque has eleven arched doorways on the front (eastern) side and seven on each of the north and south sides, which allow light and air to enter the huge prayer hall.

Inside, the mosque has a spacious interior with rows of pillars creating a beautiful geometric pattern. মসজিদের ভেতরে সাতটি সারিতে বিভক্ত স্তম্ভগুলো ছাদের গম্বুজগুলোকে ধারণ করে রেখেছে, যা দেখতে অত্যন্ত মনোমুগ্ধকর। There are also four watchtowers at the four corners of the mosque, which were probably used both for defense and for calling the Azan (the call to prayer).

Due to its outstanding architectural value, UNESCO declared the Sixty Dome Mosque a World Heritage Site in 1985. এই স্বীকৃতির ফলে মসজিদটি আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে ব্যাপক পরিচিতি লাভ করে এবং প্রতি বছর দেশ-বিদেশের বহু পর্যটক এটি দেখতে আসেন।

Today, the Sixty Dome Mosque stands as a proud symbol of Bangladesh's rich Islamic architectural heritage. এটি শুধু একটি উপাসনালয়ই নয়, বরং বাংলাদেশের মধ্যযুগীয় ইতিহাস, স্থাপত্যশৈলী ও সংস্কৃতির এক অমূল্য সাক্ষী।
