Isomerism and Types of Isomerism in Organic Compounds are important topics in Organic Chemistry. Isomerism is the phenomenon in which organic compounds have the same molecular formula but differ in their structural formula or arrangement of atoms and consequently may have different physical or chemical properties. In this lesson, learners will explore the two main types of isomerism: structural isomerism and stereoisomerism. Structural isomerism includes chain, functional, position, tautomerism, and metamerism. Stereoisomerism arises from different spatial arrangements of atoms or groups and includes geometric (cis-trans) isomerism and optical isomerism. The lesson also discusses the conditions for geometrical isomerism and the characteristics of optical isomers.
