Myths and Literature
Khona (also known as Khana) is a legendary ancient Bengali polymath, poet, and astrologer believed to have lived between the 8th and 12th centuries. She is famous for Khonar Bachan (Khona's Words), a vast collection of rhyming agricultural, meteorological, and social prophecies that guided traditional farming communities in Bengal for centuries.
Life and Legend
Identity: Legend says she was an exceptionally gifted scholar and astronomer, often associated with ancient Vikramaditya’s royal court or local traditions in Bengal.
The Myth of her Name: According to folklore, her accurate predictions often surpassed those of male court astrologers. Out of jealousy or political conflict regarding her defiance, her tongue was cut off—leading to the name "Khona," meaning someone who cannot speak.
Cultural Impact: Her maxims (vachans) remain popular in rural Bengal, offering timeless, practical advice on crop cultivation, weather patterns, and daily life
