Rupai and Saju, two young villagers from rural Bengal, fall deeply in love and get happily married.
A violent village feud forces Rupai to flee into hiding to escape the police, leaving Saju completely heartbroken.
To channel her deep grief and loneliness, Saju spends her sleepless nights embroidering their love story onto a traditional quilt.
Saju eventually dies of sorrow, requesting that the finished, tear-stained quilt be placed over her grave.
Years later, Rupai returns, collapses in grief over her grave, and dies, leading the villagers to name the land "The Field of the Embroidered Quilt."
