Vocabulary Learning through Fun Games

Lesson Title: Vocabulary Learning through Fun Games
Presenter: Md. Shamsugjoha, Assistant Professor of English, Dharampur College, Durgapur, Rajshahi

This presentation shows how English vocabulary can be taught in an enjoyable, learner-centered way through short classroom games. Many students find memorizing word lists boring and forget the words quickly. This lesson replaces rote learning with movement, guessing, speaking and teamwork, so that students learn new words and remember them for longer.

The lesson begins with a two-minute introduction, where the teacher greets the class and asks a warm-up question. The teacher then presents four to five new words with their pronunciation and meaning, and the students repeat them. The main part is a nine-minute practice session with four games:

  1. Writing in the Air: a word is "written" in the air and the class guesses it.
  2. Miming a Word: a student acts out a word silently and the class guesses it.
  3. Sentence with the Last Letter: each student makes a sentence using a word that starts with the last letter of the previous word.
  4. Acting out a Profession: a student mimes a profession such as doctor, farmer, teacher or driver, and the class guesses it.

In the conclusion, the teacher reviews the words and activities and asks students which game they enjoyed most and which word they learned. As homework, students write ten new English words and make one sentence with each.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize and understand new words, use them in meaningful sentences, take part actively in group games, and improve their vocabulary in a joyful, interactive way.

The accompanying PowerPoint has 12 colourful slides. Each slide has its own design, and the content appears with animation and transitions to keep students attentive.
